Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC Fight Night 24

Filed under:

If ever there was an event to make aspiring fighters get out their singlets and focus on their wrestling skills, UFC Fight Night 24 was it.

The ability to successfully complete and/or defend the takedown was the deciding factor in most of the fights on Saturday night. By the end, I think half the arena had unconsciously learned how to shoot a single-leg just from seeing it done over and over and over again. Bet that made for some interesting after-parties.

So who were the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between after Saturday night's wrestle-fest? The answers await you below.

The rear-naked is no joke: Jones slaps it on FOX 5 N.Y. sports dude

As MMA fighters spread the word around the world, there still remains an odd fascination with the uninitiated. The rear-naked choke is a potentially lethal move and yet radio and television goofs always ask fighters to slap on the hold. The latest was Duke Castiglione at FOX 5 New York. Jon Jones, facing Mauricio Rua in nearby Newark, N.J. at UFC 128, was in studio for an interview and actually volunteered to show Castiglione the finishing move. (4:00 mark). The FOX 5 anchors really seemed to enjoy watching Castiglione get roughed up

Matt Hughes should talk to every young fighter on the brink of stardom. We're guessing after his run-in with the guy above, Hughes would advise all fighters to refrain from "joking" around with a choke hold before UFC 64. The dopey fan actually sued Hughes.

MMA Marketplace: Limited edition Korean Zombie shirt

We've professed our love for Tri-Coasta's Korean Zombie shirts in the past. The shirt for Chan Sang Jung's twister win over Leonard Garcia is no less awesome.

This one reminds me of playing "Super Mario Brothers," "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out," and "Duck Hunt" on my old Nintendo. (Am I the only one who tried to shoot the dog on Duck Hunt? Stupid thing was always laughing at me.) Considering the way he fights, Jung would make one heck of an old-school video game character.

Get this very cool, limited edition shirt for $25 right here.

UFC middleweight Nate Marquardt doesn't like "total punk" Michael Bisping, wants to punch him in the mouth

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Michael Bisping spitting at Jorge Rivera's corner after defeating him at UFC 127 has made him a number of enemies in the UFC's middleweight division, and Nate Marquardt is the latest to add his name to the list of fighters who would like to take a shot at the Brit.

"I would love to fight that guy just to punch him in his mouth and shut him up," Marquardt said in an interview with MMAFighting.com on Thursday. "That'd be nice. He's an ass, he's a total punk, just no respect. I don't like Bisping."

Marquardt, who will meet Dan Miller in New Jersey on Saturday at UFC 128, isn't always the most out-spoken in regards to fellow fighters. But he believes Bisping's actions went beyond over the line, despite Rivera's trash talk in the build up of their fight last month.

"The crap talking and whatever, that's one thing," he said. "Guys hype up fights. And even guys that are just like that naturally, I don't hold that against them. But the fact that he goes and spits in his opponent's corner? That's so disrespectful. That's not what a martial artist does and it's not what a sportsman does."

Penick's Analysis: Bisping's got no shortage of potential opponents for his next fight. There are a lot of guys ready, willing and able to step up against him, and depending who is ready when the UFC wants to book him for his next fight. Marquardt is right up on the totem pole of fighters that make a lot of sense for that, especially with a win Saturday, but if he gets the job done against Dan Miller and Chael Sonnen isn't ready for a return yet, Bisping vs. Marquardt sounds like the right fight to me.
